2nd Ukr.Front in NE Hungary/E Slovakia '44-'456 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Dear Fellow Forum Users!
I am seeking information concerning the activities of the 2nd Ukrainian Front in Northeastern Hungary and Eastern Slovakia in 1944-45 for the purpose of research. Any and all sources, information, personal/official accounts, maps etc would be greatly appreciated. I would prefer answers in English (PM or email:drgeorge@freemail.hu), as I do not know Russian--but this is not a prerequisite!
Thank you in advance for your assistance!!

One place I'd know to start is The Last Six Months by General Shtemenko. It's heavily laced with the rhetoric of the Stalin era but it still gives a good introduction to the campaigns from across the Dnestr, through Romania and Hungary, and into Austria.

Thanks for the tip!! I found it in English on "antiqbooks" for $10.95!! I'll now try to find an online version.

Attached please find a photo of a Cseh VZ34 handgrenade found today with my Ace 250 metal detector in Eastern Slovakia, probably used by romanian forces. My question is, with what frequency did the Red Army use captured Axis weaponry and equipment during their push to liberate?

Searching military photos brings up a lot of Axis weapons in Soviet hands and vice versa.

In this photo, it looks like a Soviet crewed PzV Panther:

I had read that the German infantry actually preferred the Ppsh over the MP40, for its ruggedness and reliability. On the other hand, Soviet Scouts apparently preferred the MP40 because it was light and compact for their work.

Necessity is the mother of invention, or in this case improvisation. On the battlefield you fight with what you have or can procure. The PPSh was a very rugged and reliable weapon, however I can imagine that ammo would have been a problem--those things really ate up what was in the drum mags!!
